Who Is The Whore of Babylon?

In one single day I have received sermonettes from three different ministries naming three "whores of Babylon!"
  • The traditional Pre-Trib Positionsays that it's Rome
  • The recent Pre-Trib Position says that it's the U.S.
  • Walid Shoebat (the ex-Muslim Terrorist, now a Christian) picks Islamic Saudi Arabia
  • Oh, and I almost forgot - the ancient City of Babylon itself is another view
They can't all be correct - or can they? A number of early Christian Commentators believe both Islam and Rome were the Great Whore.  I personally eliminate the ancient city of Babylon, which is sitting under almost complete devastation and it's doubtful it will ever be rebuilt. It seems to fit scriptural descriptions of it after destruction. I also eliminate New York City as a late-comer and for another reason.

It's significant that the whore is called "Mystery" Babylon. The fact that it is called a whore (or harlot) in the Scripture indicates a system that it is a corruption of the true faith in God. Therefore, it's likely that in its beginning it practiced true faith in God. That could never apply to New York City, or even the United States, since while the Christian faith was a strong and significant factor in the U.S., the United States was never a religious system. That doesn't, however, mean that God will not punish the nation for her sins. In fact, I think He has been doing just that for our secret behind-the-scenes insistence that Israel be divided (which goes back a number of years).

Babylon was known from its inception as a pagan city, although it had periods of significant Godly influence. I don't see it as a religious whore.

Rome is a possibility, and the Islamic nations is a possibility. Both Rome and Islam came out of Christianity, and both are a corruption of it. Islam has actually been a corruption of even its Jewish roots - beginning with Ishmael and Edom. The Middle Eastern Muslim nations fit almost every scriptural description and requirement, while Rome fits but less so. It seems to me that there are some significant holes in proving Rome, although I have always tentatively accepted it.

Maybe some of those early Christian commentators weren't too far off. There is so little uncorrupted Judaism or Christianity in today's world that perhaps a coalition of Islam and Rome is possible. Have you heard of Chrislam? It's all the rage.

All we can do is keep studying, watching current events, and wait to see.
