The Unseen Captain

13And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?
14And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my Lord unto his servant?
15And the captain of the LORD's host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.

Here we find Joshua on the ground again - this time in submission and worship before the captain of the host of the Lord! This is always the response of faith when we sense the presence of the Lord, when we are on holy ground.
It's a thrilling passage. Imagine the Lord Himself approaching so that we might actually see Him with our physical eyes, which seems to have been the case here (and other places in scripture). This has not happened often in the entire history of the world.
The Christian has, however, something that none of the Old Testament saints had - and that is the constant presence of the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, living within us. This is one of the greatest mysteries of the faith. No angel, no Old Testament figure, no other beings in the cosmos have or understand this mystery. It is our great advantage over the world and over the evil principalities and powers.
And not only that ... but the Unseen Captain is watching us even though He does not appear to us as He did to Joshua. He is actually with us. We cannot see the armies of heaven with our physical eyes at this present moment, but be assured that the hosts of heaven are very near as they conduct the events of these last days.
One day soon you will see the Captain of our faith. He will come in victory. He won this battle 2000 years ago at the cross of Calvary.
