In February of 2013, Understand The Times published a commentary on our website titled What's Next For Rick Warren.

In this commentary, we provided evidence to show that Warren and Tony Blair were partnering together with the Roman Catholic Church in the formation of a P.E.A.C.E. Plan that leads towards the formation of a global religion in the name of Christ for the cause of peace. Documentation for this premise can be supported by numerous statements that both Warren and Blair have made publically from messages they have given or articles that have been written explaining their ideas. 

While many who read that commentary doubted or denied such a Warren-Rome connection, a new YouTube interview with Rick Warren and Raymond Arroyo of EWTN (published and posted on Apr 11, 2014), reveals the statements we made about the Warren-Rome partnership were accurate prophetic warnings with regard to what would happen in the future.

We highly recommend you watch the entire 30-minute interview, which was done at Saddleback Church at some date previous to the publishing date of April 11, 2-14. The interview is loaded with information that provides further insight into Rick Warren’s pathway to Rome that he has actually been supporting for quite some time. For instance, in 2005, Warren created the Purpose Driven Life Catholics program as you can see from the image below (which is taken from Rick Warren’s website)

And in his best-selling book, The Purpose Driven Life (released in 2002), Rick Warren makes several favorable references to well-known Catholics: page 88 (Brother Lawrence, a Catholic mystic), page 108 (he mentions Catholic priest, Henri Nouwen and Catholic panentheist St. John of the Cross), and twice he mentions Mother Theresa (pages 125 and 231).

But in this EWTN interview, Warren takes his views of the Catholic Church to even “greater” heights and admits he is in favor of the Roman Catholic New Evangelization program (set up to win the “lost brethren” back to the Mother Church).

LifeWay, Rick Warren, and the Son of God

LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention and Southern Baptist Pastor Rick Warren have teamed up with the New Age Catholics Mark Burnett and Roma Downey to produce “Son of God: The Life of Jesus in You.” This is a six-session “Bible study” for small groups.  As a Southern Baptist who is concerned about the direction of the Southern Baptist Convention and LifeWay (wholly owned and controlled by the SBC), I want to write an in-depth critique of this resource.


First, let me share an underlying concern with small group “Bible study” as it is most often seen today. Can we really call it Bible study when a participant would not have to bring a Bible? The Scriptures used are printed in the student’s book, devoid of context and often used out of context (as you will soon see). The contemporary small-group is a study of a celebrity pastor or teacher’s work. Only by a wild stretch of the imagination could the participant leave the session saying they had engaged in Bible study. The small-group Bible study is the equivalent of medical school students playing a game of Operation or engineers building a bridge using Legos.  In years past, the church had small groups that would meet and study Christian authors, but it was called it a book circle. Bible study was when people brought their Bible and studied the Bible for content. This kind of study is almost non-existent in the purpose-driven, growth-oriented church. Rather, the “Discipleship Pastor” will scurry from one publisher to another looking for the coolest six-week topical study to throw to their small-group leaders, whose function is to push play on the DVD and ask the pre-arranged questions. Click here to see page 4, which contains “A Note to Small-Group Hosts.”) Personally, I simply don’t have time nor interest in such shallow “discipleship.” No wonder the average church member (and probably the above-average church member) couldn’t pass a basic Bible-knowledge quiz.

The subtitle of the series, The Life of Jesus in You, foretells the basic premise of the study:  YOU.  The resource takes the baptism, temptation, suffering, death, resurrection, and ministry as a springboard to talk about YOU.  Once again, the narcissism of the church-growth movement displays its ugly head.

Bible Translation

My first issue is the use of the Biblical translations. There are ten translations shown in the copyright page—

• New International Version – NIV 2011
• New Living Translation – NLT 2005
• New King James Version – NKJV 1982
• The Contemporary English Version – CEV 1995
• The Living Bible – TLB 1971
• Today’s English Version – TEV 1976
• God’s Word – GW 1995
• The Message – MSG 2002
• The Amplified Bible – AMP 1965
• The New Jerusalem Bible – NJB – 1990

Any pastor, author, or book publisher who uses 10 versions of the Bible in his sermon, book, or resource is seeking a rendering of the Word that fits his agenda. There is simply no legitimate reason to use 10 versions of Scripture in honest Bible study.  Furthermore, the versions used by this particular resource are almost all paraphrases and untrustworthy for honest Biblical study.

Also at issue in this resource is the fact that messengers of the Southern Baptist Convention have repeatedly and unequivocally rejected the New International Version which is the default version for this resource. Not only have messengers to the convention rejected the NIV, but they have asked LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention not to use the NIV. In the Son of God resource and in many others, the administration and trustees of LifeWay have continually rejected the will of the convention in this matter.

Rejection of the gender-neutral NIV was clearly stated by messengers to the SBC in 1997, 2002, and 2011.  The 2011 resolution encouraged pastors to make their congregations aware of translation errors of the 2011 NIV, requested LifeWay not to sell the NIV in its bookstores (it still does), and stated “profound disappointment” with Biblica (the new name of the International Bible Society, who translated the work) and Zondervan, which publishes the NIV.  The 2002 SBC resolution was aimed at what was then called Today’s New International Version (TNIV). The TNIV was incorporated into the 2011 version with the “Today’s” designation dropped but the bulk of the material included. The NIV you purchase today is the TNIV of 2002.  In the 2002 resolution, “agencies, boards, and publishing arms of the Southern Baptist Convention” were asked to “refrain from using this translation” in publications.

LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention needs a conservative resurgence, but that is a topic for another day.

Why was Jesus baptized?

The LifeWay resource begins by asking a legitimate question, “Why was Jesus baptized?” After all, He had no sin. From a legitimate question, Rick Warren then simply makes stuff up.  He states that, “Jesus’ baptism was His way of identifying with sinful humanity…in His baptism, Jesus was showing us a way to live” (pg. 8).  Is this really why Jesus was baptized? Is there any Scriptural evidence that Jesus was ‘identifying with sinful humanity” in baptism, and “showing us a way to live?” Is it even theologically correct for the sinless Son of God to “identify with sinful humanity?” 

After all, He became flesh outside of human conception in order to be human without being connected to “sinful humanity.” Does Jesus use the Bill Clinton, “I feel your pain” slogan?
The reason for Jesus’ baptism is stated in Scripture: “to fulfill all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15). While a good Bible study would search the Scriptures to find insight into what that means, Warren simply makes a declaration that Jesus’ baptism was to identify with sinful humanity. It is beyond me how such identification with sinful humanity is a fulfilment of righteousness.

Movie Clip

Each session of the study includes a movie clip from The Son of God movie. In session 1, John the Baptist (complete with dreadlocks, because this was the hairstyle of ancient Jewish Levites?), had a slo-mo baptism complete with freaky background music and Jesus’ instruction to John, “What you are doing is right, baptize me.”  Warren introduced the clip by saying that “When Jesus publically obeyed the Father in baptism, the Father publically affirmed Jesus as Son.” While he may not have meant this to sound like the old adoptionist heresy, the “if/then” nature of the statement brings it close.

Warren continues to say that the Father affirmed Jesus as “my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” But then Warren states, “Do you know the Father says the same three things about you when you identify with him in baptism?  You are my son or daughter, I love you, I’m proud of you.”  It is beyond inappropriate, in my opinion, to take the declaration of God toward Jesus and adopt it for ourselves and anyone who will be baptized. Narcissism rules.  In fact, John tells us that the sign of the Spirit was the indicator that Jesus was the Messiah (John 1:32-33). The declaration of the Father is something that we simply cannot adopt for ourselves and then distribute at-will to anyone who will be baptized (unless we are comfortable declaring ourselves to be the Messiah).

Also troublesome to me is Warren’s question, “Do you want God to be pleased with you? Then you need to take the simple step of obedience and be baptized.”  This statement gives the impression that favor with God results from obedience in Baptism, which Warren says, “is not an option” (pg. 9). Without some clarification, a young believer could easily get into a works-based righteousness. Warren backed up his “baptism is not an option” teaching by quoting 1 John 2:3, “We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands” (NIV). If one studies 1 John, they would find out that 1 John 2:3 (nor anything in the entire epistle) is remotely about baptism.

Warren’s final word about baptism is that it says you are not just a believer, “you’re also a belonger” (pg. 10).  His use of Scripture for this teaching is one that is common in purpose-driven churches, and one that should raise a red flag in the mind of any reader. The Scripture quoted looks exactly like this—
“For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body…Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.”  1 Corinthians 12:13, 27, NIV.

Did you notice the subtlety? Between verses 13 and 27 are 13 skipped verses, each glossed over by an ellipses.  As read in the LIfeWay literature, one would see that Baptism makes you a belonger, proven by the fact that, “we were all baptized…now you are the body.” Skipped is the fact that the passage is not about water baptism at all, and that verse 27 begins a new paragraph, and that the context is not about our belonging but about spiritual gifts and assignments.

DISTURBING - SBC Pastors Conference 2014

I have long been concerned about the SBC. A high percentage of their founders were Freemasons, as is Billy Graham. This is a matter of record. The article below comes from Apprising Ministries.  What disturbs me greatly is the video of the song, "Show Us our Glory, Lord." This generation and the one before it has driven 90% of the protestant church off the cliff spiritually. I have watched this great falling away occur over the past 25-50 years. It is not remotely like the church I knew.

What's wrong with the video? Being a veteran researcher in the area of the occult, and a musician, I can tell you without hesitation - singing that song will attract only one thing: DEMONIC ENTRANCE INTO YOUR LIFE. These popular, sensual, vainly repetitious and highly emotional songs that sound 100% like pop love songs will not attract the Lord's glory or power. This is a generation obsessed with false signs and wonders - just as Christ warned about, telling us that an evil generation seeks for signs and wonders.

He will not succumb to our selfish and fleshly desires in this age. No. He is looking for FAITH in his people. Faith is proven by its lack of sight or proof. In this age, that is strictly Satan's territory. He WILL appear and he WILL be convincing. You WILL accept him as Lord of your life. But he wlll be a counterfeit Jesus. And you will hear, "Depart from me. I never knew you," from the real Jesus Christ. You have been warned.

Rick Warren & Company will be bringing their standard formula tried and true pattern into this Pastor's Conference. I expect these 'pastors' to be excitedly taking this influence into the SBC Convention immediately following their own hyped up convention. I also expect the SBC to begin a slow descent into demonic apostasy*, following the vast majority of what was once the true church of Jesus Christ. I pray I am wrong. CMR 

* I use the term 'apostasy' because the great majority of the biblical Christian doctrines themselves have been abandoned by most of the church itself. I have watched this happen with my own eyes.

SBC PASTORS CONFERENCE 2014 WITH RICK WARREN, FRANCIS CHAN. AND JAMES MACDONALD

In addition to monitoring trends going on within the greater Christian community, a part of my labor in the Lord here at Apprising Ministries, while our shrinking funds will allow, is to make you aware of personalities, conferences, etc. which you need to be aware of.
My writing here in this case really becomes a kind of all of the above. Let me begin by bringing to your attention the SBC Pastor’s Conference 2014—Show Us Your Glory (PC14), which is coming up June 8-9 2014 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore. MD.
The official website tells us:

The 2014 Southern Baptist Pastors’ Conference, June 8-9, immediately followed by the Southern Baptist Convention, June 10-11, will be held in Baltimore, at the Baltimore Conference Center right on Inner Harbor.  The theme of the conference represents a deep soul-cry of “Show us Your glory”.
The Conference President, Dr. Bruce Frank of Biltmore Baptist Church in Arden, NC and his team have been working, praying and planning to create a meeting where the presence of God is experienced in a life changing powerful way. (source, click About)

So all of this contemplative sounding language concerning the upcoming PC14, in order to experience “the presence of God” they hope “in a life changing powerful way,” tells us it’s actually the precursor to set the table for this year’s annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention.
There are a number of speakers scheduled for PC14 such as:

J.D. Greear, lead pastor of The Summit Church, in Raleigh-Durham, NC, Johnny Hunt, former President of the Southern Baptist Convention and senior pastor of First Baptist Church Woodstock, in Woodstock, Georgia.
Dr. Ronnie Floyd, served as Senior Pastor of Cross Church in Northwest Arkansas for 27+ years, Clayton King, founder & president of Crossroads Ministries, teaching pastor at Perry Noble’s Newspring Church, Campus Pastor at Liberty University,1
Dr. Tony Evans, senior pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship for over 36 years and Pricilla Shirer’s dad, and David Platt, senior pastor of The Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham, Alabama, author of the book Radical, and appeared in Elephant Room 1.

As you can see below, the three I pointed out in my title are listed first, likely because they are very well known and influential names within mainstream evangelicalism as a whole:

Not surprisingly, and not necessarily in this order, that big three above will be closing the show for the SBC Pastor’s Conference 2014—Show Us Your Glory:

In leaving this, for now, I’m going to share a few reasons for concern about the Southern Baptist Convention choosing these men to teach our pastors and to set the stage for the 2014 SBC Annual Meeting. Let’s begin with James MacDonald , who among other things, would dream up the Elephant Room.
You should know that, so set in their goal to use ER2 to mainstream Word Faith mogul T.D. Jakes, both MacDonald and co-host Mark Driscoll would each choose to resign from The Gospel Coalition.2 Yet the SBC has apparently derived the its very theme for their PC14 “Show Us Your Glory” from MacDonald.
A source who was directly involved with Harvest Bible Fellowship, the denomination extending from James MacDonald,3 informs me that “Show Us Your Glory” is the primary theme of MacDonald’s book Vertical Church (VC). You need to know that there’s much misinterpretation of Scripture throughout VC.4
It turns out that “Show Us Your Glory” may derive from MacDonald using these words of Moses in VC in order to create the centered on the self emotional corporate worship experience. This type of sentimental “worship” is so typical today of multisite megachurches headed by vision-casting prophet-pastors like James MacDonald.
We’re also informed that there’s a popular Vertical Church Band song which repeats the following  phrase over and over a la a mantra: “Show us, show us Your glory;  show us. show us Your power.” Listen for yourself:

 

Those familiar with the Jesus Culture (JC) band of Bill Johnson’s Bethel Church, whom Louis Giglio brought to his Passion 2013, will notice the song’s much like the music of JC. And this Vertical Church Band, “as part of Harvest Bible Chapel”,5 will be at PC14 along with Harvest Bible Chapel senior pastor James MacDonald:

I’ve also told you that these ER conferences have been the source of an emerging self-appointed Evangelical Ecumenical Magisterium (EEM) comprised of most of the multi-site megachurch prophet-pastors who participated in ER as well as some of those who pioneered this Seeker Driven phenomenon such as Rick Warren.
Four years ago in Rick Warren Brings Love On Record I showed you that Warren tweeted his love for some of these prophet-pastors who’d go on to become an integral part of this EEM:

Most likely you’re aware of the huge Biblical problems with Warren’s teaching concerning the mythology of his Purpose Driven Life; if not I’ll suggest you peruse the many source materials I collected for you within: Refuting Rick Warren. Here I’m only going to remind you of Warren’s sinful ecumenicism.
I’ve mentioned before that I am a former Roman Catholic so this issue is close to my heart. The SBC is reputed to be the largest Protestant denomination in the United States. How odd then that I would have to warn you that Southern Baptists Assist The Roman Catholic Church To Infiltrate Evangelicalism.
Three years ago in Rick Warren And Teachings Of Demons I documented for you Warren’s personal position on the Roman Catholic Church. For a quick example, Warren is on record as opining:

“Now I don’t agree with everything in everybody’s denomination, including my own. I don’t agree with everything that [Roman] Catholics do or Pentecostals do, but what binds us together is so much stronger than what divides us,” he said. “I really do feel that these people are brothers and sisters in God’s family. I am looking to build bridges with the Orthodox Church, looking to build bridges with the Catholic Church,….” (source, emphasis mine)
“The Church, in all its expressions—[Roman] Catholic, Evangelical, Pentecostal, Protestant and many others—has 2.3 billion followers.” (source, emphasis mine)

Warren’s since become bolder in promoting this apostate idea e.g. Rick Warren And His Brother, “His Eminence” Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop Of New York; we even see Warren encouraging the corrupt Mysticism of Roman Catholic mystics e.g. Rick Warren Now Openly Promoting Contemplative Spirituality/Mysticism.
As far as Francis Chan is concerned, who often speaks at Passion conferences6, his spiritual radar is so jammed that he’s even gushed his admiration for New Apostolic Reformation false “Apostle/Prophet” Mike Bickle of the International House of Prayer as you’ll see in Francis Chan Declares, “I Love Mike Bickle Of IHOP.”
The sad fact is, spiritual wingnuts just don’t come any easier to spot than the warped and toxic Mike Bickle.7 So, here’s my question: Why would I want to try and learn about God’s glory from men like Rick Warren, Francis Chan, and James MacDonald, when it’s pretty clear that their teachings and discernment are so far off target?

Rick Warren, An Apostle of The Antichrist?

From the beginning of Rick Warren’s explosion onto the religious scene, he has been totally apostate.

At the early stages only sharp Biblical discernment could see through his false ideas. But now his commitment to ‘CHRISLAM” makes his purpose plain. He is clearly one of the apostles to the Antichrist dedicated to replacing the God and Christ of the Holy Bible. At this point his blasphemy is evident and no Man of God can be silent. We must warn the multitudes still following his words of fantasy.

“A Purpose Driven Life” is a beautiful thought when it is connected to Absolute Truth. Some of the greatest Christians have followed the purpose that God called them to fulfill. Living true to the Bible is a “Purpose Driven Life.” There is no real success in life unless it is living by the pure Word of God. Let’s try to understand the thinking that has driven this entire scheme of Rick Warren… We will deal with four main ideas today on this Broadcast. 

1. The first idea he is known for is his dedication to Religious Rock music in the House of God. From his beginning until now Rock Music has become the main style of music in almost the entire Mega Church world. Rick Warren has duped an entire generation of pastors and nearly all Youth Leaders and Religious Celebrates. The mindset of this crowd has fallen so low, and in many cases so vulgar that sensible people are beginning to see the handwriting on the wall. 

2. His love for the lying Paraphrased Bibles was the second idea that dominated Rick’s thinking. His first choice was a book called “The Message.” To call this a Bible would be a terrible mistake. This is actually a New Age translation. This book calls the Antichrist, an anarchist. It eliminates the words, “falling away” from the text in II Thessalonians. Here is an example of the King James Bible and then one of the Paraphrased books, first I quota the King James. “And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ.” (II Corinthians 5:18a,). Mr. Warren quotes Jesus Christ as saying, “All this is done by God, who through Jesus Christ changed us from enemies into his friends.” (II Corinthians 5:18a, Today’s English Version). In both of these quotes the strong theological words of “atonement” and “reconciled” are passed over for the empty theology of “friends.” No person that believes in the infallible Scripture can take this carelessly. 

3 His third blasphemy was his treatment of the people that were church leaders who resisted the new music or casual style of worship. It was “get use to it or get out of the way.” Millions of people have had to leave the home church of their families, churches they helped pay for or denominations they had spent their life in. The destruction of Churches is continuing daily and multitudes have found themselves without a church home. There are many more doctrinal facts and problems that this man’s books and teaching have caused. He is a wrecking crew in one man. I have fresh documentation that he is a member of the “Council on Foreign Relations.” This put him under the influence of the “One World Order” and explains his effort with “Chrislam.”


4. His ultimate blasphemy is to reduce the great God Jehovah and His eternal Son Jesus Christ to “Chrislam.” To replace our Sovereign God with the radical god of Muhammad is the darkest act of a professing minister I have seen in my lifetime. When the devil hangs Rick Warren’s distorted body on his trophy wall in hell and laughs his hideous laughter, it will not be a pretty picture. My gifts this week are two Booklets. The first is entitled “Allah is not Jehovah God” and the second is, “THE BATTLE FOR RELIGIOUS MUSIC.”
