The Watchers

You better watch out; you better not pout
You better not cry ... I'm tellin' you why ...

...The Watchers are watching.

""I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed, and, behold, a watcher and an holy one came down from heaven." Daniel 4:13

And, some version of Daniel 4:13 will become a reality for us. It is only in Daniel that we find the term "watchers" in the Bible. Some scholars apply this term only to the fallen angels, but others apply it to all of the heavenly angels. The Bible is not explicit, but I will use the term to apply to all of the angels.

We do know that one of the primary occupations of heavenly watchers is to watch us. They are intensely observing events here on earth   In fact, Paul says that he and the apostles had been made "a spectacle unto the world, and to angels, and to men" (1 Cor. 4:9). The word 'spectacle' is actually 'theatre,' also translated the same in Acts 19:29, 31, the only other usage of the word in scripture. Heard the saying, "All the world's a stage" ?! Well, it's true.

I find it endlessly intriguing - and sobering - to realize that we are constantly being watched, constantly on stage, and of specific interest to the angels. I think of it often, of course ... surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. And this 'play' is coming to the Grand Finale soon. The heavenly audience is spellbound as they observe us "run with patience the race that is set before us" (Hebrews 12:1.)

The Bible also reveals that these angels have an intense interest, "a desire to look into" the things happening here on earth. 1 Peter 1:12.  Apparently they find the church, and the entire plan of salvation, endlessly fascinating. Remember, salvation does not apply to the angels; they are created heavenly beings not included in the salvation plan for mankind.

It appears that they have been watching and trying to comprehend, as do we, to "see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God" (Ephesians 3:9-10).

I have intensely studied the heavenly realm, the angels, etc., and the more I study the more certain I am that the life of the Christian after Christ returns to earth, will be greatly like the life we have right here and now, only better. And... our position and responsibility in that next part of eternal life will depend on what we have done in this life to be obedient and conform to God's desire for us.

All of heaven is watching the goings-on at this critical time on earth. Make sure you are fulfilling that role that God created you for here on earth. You don't want to be embarrassed when you meet everyone :-)
